A womenswear line designed mainly by Ashburn Eng, young&restless is made for the free-spirited, confident and unpretentious woman, who is sophisticated yet, bold enough to daydream. She is forever young and down-right restless.

Having achieved much success as a fashion stylist and creative director of Test Shoot Gallery, Ashburn Eng's works received due recognition when he was the recipient of the two top prizes at the Iconique Societas Awards in 2009 for Best Fashion Stylist and Overall Winner.

“For every failure, there’s an alternative course of action. You just have to find it. When you come to roadblock, take a detour. “- Mary Kay Ash, Founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics

Initially, income was unstable for his freelancing career as a fashion stylist as he could never anticipate when the next pay cheque will arrive. There was one incident when it took more than a year for him to receive payment of over $1,000. But as the years went by, with more experience, better portfolio and sufficient contacts, he managed to establish a full-time career.

“My love for fashion came “instinctively”. Since young, I have always been fascinated with fictional characters, especially sci-fi ones and the idea of incorporating them into my creations and conveying ideas through my inspirations excites me; especially when I am conceptualizing the final visual for fashion or designing,” commented by Eng.

“I’m pretty much a surrealist and a day tripper. Thus my work reflects a certain form of escapism from reality at certain points in time. My inspiration idol will have to be Katie Grand. I admire her for her bravery in exploring fashion and impeccable style.”

When asked what are his principles or philosophies in life, he said: “I would say the flapper girl symbolizes my philosophy in life. It is a period of time where one wants to enjoy oneself in life, more willing to move on from the past, slightly rebellious from the corset limitation and all wanting to enjoy life like there is no tomorrow.”

“I'm more inclined to Japanese designers like Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo. The 'Japonaiserie' movement has made a big impact on contemporary fashion with its inventive shapes and monochrome tones, shaking the fashion industry.”

To Ashburn Eng, styling and fashion design play vital roles in the fashion business. Designing is a fundamental process that must first be done and styling helps to convey a stylistic image that makes the designer’s visions accessible to the audience out there.

Asia is moving rapidly into another phase of political, social, and economic dimensions. While catching up with the western counterpart, it is struggling to remain true to itself, its heritage, traditions and costumes.

“The boundary between Asian and Western fashion is beginning to blur. But driven by the force of urbanization and consumer revolution, young designers in Asia are creating fresh, progressive and fashion-forward styles within the new phase of culture,” he explained.

Back to his Spring Summer 2011 collection, it is called ‘The Flying Squirrel’.

The Flying Squirrel Collection

Visualizing a flying squirrel landing in an urban cityscape, the designer worked with simple geometrical shapes which took cues off modern architectures. The pieces are formed from basic shapes like squares, circles and triangles, which is evident when the garments are laid flat. Accentuating the woman's curve, cut-out pattern drafts are ‘sandwiched’ and sewn together primitively (through non-fussy and uncomplicated construction).

It's awesome!

“S/S11 features raised hemlines for a more optimistic and floaty collection. I hope that the wearer will be able to fantasise themselves on escapism, like a flying squirrel, a bee, or even a butterfly; a desire to escape from reality. Ultra lightweight and breathable fabrics with a colour palette that resembles the transiting light at the end of a tunnel were used throughout the collection,” said Ashburn Eng.
